Padre Island National Seashore is 70 miles in length, and is the longest stretch of undeveloped barrier island in the world.

The National Park Service on Padre Island monitors the beach for nesting turtles, and removes the eggs to a "hatchery". Once the turtles hatch, they are released early the next morning. They turn instinctively towards the sun, and "hurry" to the ocean. The Park Service uses poles with fluttering flags to keep the Laughing Gulls, and other predators away, giving the endangered species a chance to survive the wild
